Happy New Year and happy holidays! As we welcome in the season of winter it is time for us to break out the thicker neoprene and the cold-water wax. But it isn’t all sad and bad news in the northeast as the water and air temperatures continue to dip, winter brings us more consistent swell and more favorable winds. Here on long Island, we love a north based wind, and we see the prevailing wind directions switch from south in the warmer months to more west and north based winds during the winter season. We also see a lot of Nor’easters and other storm systems that pump the east coast full of swell, think of them as your cold-water hurricanes! This makes our winter season the most consistent and highest quality season for surf in the New York City area, and when you combine that with very thin crowds it results in some of the best quality conditions and line ups you will see on the east coast all year long.
